I think mp3's should exist because not everyone can afford to buy cd's, and love music. Second of all, some people like to sample music then buy the cd's. The music industry has enough money already. It's time they lose a bit, no?

[glow=red,2,300]I agree... I don't download music anymore, but I used to leave my computer on 24/7 downloading music and movies...
If music companys had any brains they'd sell MP3's and CD's...
*go WinMX and all those other places*[/glow]

I don't want to see CDs go away - I really think there is a place for both MP3s and conventional CDs.
As a fan of classical music, I can say that very little of what I want is online in that genre. For example: A classical music listener may specifially want to here Mikhail Pletnev performing a piano version of Pictures at an Exhibition rather than hearing an orchestrated version or a different pianist.
Furthermore, people who are older than me, are probably less likely to fully take advantage of what is available on-line, even if it does happen to be there.
Also, with classical music, sometimes the book is really really important - By reading the books that come with the CDs you can learn a lot about Bach that you otherwise wouldn't know. And for opera, it's critical. It's just a lot less fun to listen to the Magic Flute without having the book to follow the story. Opera music (imo) is partially enticing because of the story, which means that either you'd have to provide all that online (which sometimes the books that come with opera cds can be as thick as a paperback novel) -- or ?? I don't know.
I recently discovered the beauty of Shn files which I think sound noticebly higher quality than MP3s. Anyway, I generally think that online music is a better solution for popular music than classical.

most of my mp3's are rare/live/unavailable stuff. if i get some 'illegal' tunes, i usually delete 'em once i get the cd they're on.

I like the fact that MP3s are small enough to keep on your computer. I downloaded several shows of Charlotte Martin (avail at archive.org) and discovered that the shn and wav files ate up almost all my available disc space.
