Okay, i had a strange but good Halloween last night and I feel like sharing it. Of course, just ignore or delete this thread if you don't like it.
I live in San Francisco in the Tenderloin which is a very central and urban neighborhood, close to city hall, and within walking distances of everything. Me and 3 friends (sorry, I know that is horrible grammar construction but it sounds good to me) decided to "go to the Castro" for Halloween because apparently it is a San Francisco thing, and that's what everyone does.
I wore as witch hat and a cape but I really didn't dress up. The 4 of us decided to walk to the Castro because it's only about a mile and a half a way. There was the most incredible crowd I've ever seen. The Castro, btw, is SF's gay and lesbian neighborhood. When we were a mile a way from the Castro we saw the the city had blocked off the streets and people in mass were walking down the streets and sidewalks.
We kept walking, wondering what we would get to.
People really dressed up - it was amazing how many Dorothys from the Wizard of Oz there were, and slutty Brittney Spears, slutty nurses, angels, devils, men in drag, sponge bob, bill clinton, ghouls, ... everything you can imagine - and lots of cross dressing going on. Some of the men were very beautiful.
We walked and walked until Castro street, literally having to push our way through the crowd (it seemed like all 800,000 san fransicans were there).
Pretty soon we realized there was NOTHING to see or do. There were almost no booths of any sort; every bar was packed so full that there was no way to even think about going in; it was just nuts. It was like as if people just come out to see each other, and in a weird way we were part of the spectacle too. It was just strange.
We really didn't end up doing anything but walking for about 2 hours, and then finally we ended up in another neighborhood ("the mission district"), and the crowd had thinned, and we had tapas and a drink and went home.
strange.
