This is a story I wrote for my english comp I class
The all too familiar scenes flew by the car window. An elderly woman was walking her dog. She knew for a fact the woman, whose name was Gladys, walked her pooch at the exact same time every day. One might say you could set your watch by her. A school bus was waiting at the curb for the elementary school children who were happy running with their friends so they didn’t miss their ride. An exasperated mother was handing her children brown paper sacks full of sandwiches and fruit which they would surely trade with their friends later as a single leaf fell from the oak tree in front of the house.
It was a comforting scene to some, small town life, suburban bliss, perfect families, and perfect smiles. She knew everyone loved it here; everything was so happy, so fine. But for Amelia Stewart it wasn’t enough. She wanted excitement, something to come in and shake everything up. She didn’t think this total happiness could last and while everyone else was completely content, she was restless. Nobody knew it but for the longest time she had felt a nagging feeling in the back of her mind, a depression, like she was being held back from something, like she could do more.
Amelia wasn’t happy, even though she knew she should be. Everyone she knew was happy in their humdrum little town, her parents were happy, her boyfriend was happy, and so were her friends. She would have been branded a freak if they knew that she wasn’t.
“You okay Mel?”
The familiar voice brought her back to reality and she looked over at the drivers seat towards her boyfriend Josh. She felt a familiar sense coming over her, like she was trapped and had to break free. She shuddered for a moment and closed her eyes, wanting to burst into tears.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” she whispered after a moment.
But Amelia wasn’t fine, she had never been fine. She didn’t know why but for as long as she could remember she had never been happy. There always seemed to be something missing from her life. She couldn’t pinpoint it but she hoped she found it soon, because every day was getting harder and harder to bear.
The day began as normally as every other; Amelia knew it was going to be another long and boring day. But something was different, there was someone new in school, someone not normal. It was always a big deal when someone moved into the small town but this was especially odd. The girl wasn’t like anyone else, she didn’t have a uniform so she was in normal clothing, black clothing. She had absolutely no makeup on and her long hair was simply pulled back, no muss no fuss. And several facial piercings added to an effect that everyone found quite…scary.
The girl intrigued Amelia, she didn’t think it was fair how everyone was stereotyping the girl but then again she found her scary herself. But there was something else to her that she saw, it excited her and it angered her also.
At lunch that day one of her friends leaned over to her and whispered, pointing at the girl, “They say she likes girls.”
“Well who doesn’t?”
“No I mean…likes girls…she’s a lesbian,” she whispered, a tone of disgust in her voice. Amelia could feel the heat rising to her face.
Why would that embarrass her?
“So,” she whispered, “I don’t care.”
But deep down she knew that she did.
Fifth period Chemistry was harder than ever and Amelia dismissed herself so she could go to the bathroom and take some aspirin and cool off. A feeling that she couldn’t quite name had been gnawing at her all day. It seemed that all that was running through her mind all day was that girl and the thought that she was a lesbian. But why would that matter to her? She wasn’t gay…she liked guys, she had a boyfriend.
She heard the toilet flush as she looked at her red face in a mirror and splashed some water on it. She opened her eyes and looked next to her. There she was, the girl who everyone was talking about, standing right next to her.
Flashes of things that Amelia had never even thought of, dreamed of, or even considered took over her mind for a moment as she gripped the side of the sink.
“Are you okay?” the girl asked as she looked over at her.
Amelia could feel her face growing redder by the second.
“My names Elsie,” the girl said as she threw her paper towel in the trash.
“I-I’m M-Mel…” she barely whispered.
“Nice to meet you,” Elsie said with a cocky smile on her face as she walked out the door and into the hall.
Amelia looked into the mirror and cursed.
“What is wrong with me?”
She looked at herself in the mirror one more time and then left the bathroom. As she lingered through the hallway she couldn’t help herself from thinking about her name. Elsie…what a beautiful name. She whispered it for a moment and then blushed, looking around.
Nobody was there.
Why was she so infatuated with this girl?
Why couldn’t she stop thinking about her?
Amelia sat in her bedroom, her radio blaring as she tried to work out a seemingly impossible algebra problem. She looked out her window and her mind began to wander slowly. And for some reason it rested on Elsie. It was always resting on her. It had been resting on her ever since she had seen her that first day a few weeks ago.
Why her?
Why did she keep thinking about her?
She fell back onto her pillows and closed her eyes. It had been weeks and she still wasn’t over this obsession, why was she feeling like this?
Was she in love or something?
“No,” she told herself, “I am not falling for a girl…I CAN’T fall for a girl…”
But why couldn’t she? There were plenty of lesbians and bisexuals in society, why couldn’t she be one? Her parents would kill her! All of her friends would think she was crazy…she wouldn’t be allowed to live here in peace anymore.
She realized that she didn’t want that though deep down she had always known that she didn’t want to be here, she didn’t want to stay like this forever. She had been denying her feelings for so long that now it was all rushing towards her like a freight train.
Amelia stood up and looked out the window, taking a deep breath. Was she really thinking about this? Thinking about being with a girl? She had never even considered this before!
Or maybe she had…
Flashes of her youth began to come back to her. She remembered reading books when she was little and becoming obsessed with some of the female characters, she had been fascinated with them.
She remembered as a ten year old, lying on her bed one night, tossing and turning thinking “I’m a lesbian.”
Why had she been thinking that?
She couldn’t even remember what had made her think that she was a lesbian at such a young age.
But she had.
And she had a feeling that she needed to decide it once and for all.
It wasn’t easy to do, but she knew she had to do it.
The tension between her and Elsie was too much to handle, she had to do something about it. She didn’t know what…but she had to.
Just as she was about to get up and walk out of her room to take a walk the doorbell rang. She had no idea who it could be. She heard her parents opening the door and she ran down the stairs to see who it was.
Her heart nearly stopped as she saw Elsie standing there with her parents, they lived just across the street…but they had never come over before.
Amelia stared down at them, her tongue remaining glued to roof of her mouth as she stared at Elsie…she couldn’t even think or function, why was she acting like this?
“Girls why don’t you get acquainted while we discuss things,” her dad said as he motioned from Elsie to Amelia.
“S-sure,” Amelia smiled, “Come on up to my room…we can work on homework.”
Elsie nodded silently and followed her up the stairs again as Amelia’s stomach did flip-flops. Was this actually happening? She hadn’t even thought about it this far yet, what if something happened was she ready…
“Are you okay?” she asked as they walked into her room, a smile on her face.
“Yeah,” Amelia lied, “Anyway, this is my room, it’s kind of dumb but oh well…”
Elsie snickered as she sat down on the floor and crossed her legs Indian style, “So, what can you and I talk about?”
“I don’t know,” she whispered as she sat down on her bed and looked at the floor, she could feel herself blush.
Elsie grinned and sat down next to her, she could barely take it anymore, something was happening, her stomach dropped and she couldn’t look up at her, god what was wrong with her!
She felt her hand under her chin and she looked up at her, stunned to realize she had tears in her eyes.
“I know what you’re thinking,” Elsie whispered softly as she gazed into her eyes, “I’m thinking it too.”
And with that they leaned in and pressed their lips together and Amelia finally knew what she had at last found what she had been missing. It all made sense now, and although dangerous she was already willing to sacrifice everything for this feeling.
Because she knew she had found love, she had found her soulmate.
